Soap Making!

Last weekend, the Science Club hosted a soap making seminar. We gratefully received funds from a special artist friend back home to make this whole thing possible J The science club literally had zero funds before, so without this contribution we wouldn’t have been able to do ANY projects. We’re selling the soap we made to continue making money for the club to fund other upcoming projects. I can’t tell you how happy and excited my students are!

Soap making is a great, small business for students to get involved in to help earn school fees to continue their studies. However, they themselves do not have the start up money to invest in the training, supplies, etc. So, through the club, many students were able to acquire a free training. They LOVED it! It turned into a competition to see which group could make the best soap—I couldn’t even hear myself talk at some points when they were all cheering for their own stations. So, so much fun!!

We made liquid and bar soap—both turning out to be a huge success. The staff members are raving about how well they clean. They’re even pestering the club to sell them at wholesale so they can then go and sell it themselves to make a profit. YEAH RIGHT!!! We didn’t invest a ton of money for others to profit! (I’m not saying that in a mean way, but the club needs to make as much back as possible to continue trying new things!)

Speaking of upcoming projects, we want to get into chalk making (which we could then sell to the schools around), candle making, investing in different types of media in the science subject area for better learning, tree naming around the school compound, and making volcanoes and solar systems! By the end of the first term next year—so right before I leave—we want to have a big science expo showcasing everything we’ve learned/done for the student body at large, staff members, key stakeholders in the school, parents, and the community. I just hope that after I leave, the club continues with as much enthusiasm as it has right now!
